There is power in serendipity. Of all the great quotable statements made by Gary Hoover, one of the nation’s premier entrepreneurs, at last week’s IdaVation conference – that one stuck with me the most. I think most communicators can relate to fortunate unexpected discoveries.
Hoover was speaking on ‘Eight Steps from Vision to Innovation’ – the keys underlying success in any enterprise. And while it was at a conference designed to support innovation and entrepreneurship throughout Idaho – his eight points should be taken to heart by any individual in any organization (or out on their own) who desires to be a thought leader in their industry and bring about change while raising the bar.
It is a topic Hoover has been preaching on for years, but you could never tell due to his contagious enthusiasm for sharing his 8 Steps to Innovation
- Sense of Curiosity – There is power in serendipity. The difference between winners and losers is losers get 100% buried in the details, while winners only get 99% buried.
- Sense of History – Remember that you can only go as far forward as you are committed to looking backwards. Study the past just as much as you are planning for the future.
- Sense of Geography – Know your turf
- A Vision that is Clear – Know your core values
- A Vision that is Consistent – Stay true
- A Vision that is Serving - How is the world a better place by your presence
- A Vision that is Unique – Know what sets you apart
- Possess Passion - Truly love what you do. And figure out how doing what you love matches what people – your customers – need.
